1When I was in Copenhagen, I decided to hop on the train and pass the famous Øresund Bridge that turns into a tunnel and arrived to Malmo.

It was a one – afternoon trip with no special sites to see, but it was nice thought to be in Sweden for a couple of hours.

Plus, it was sunny… 🙂

So I discovered Sweden’s third largest city and at the same time the home of the Scandinavia’s tallest building, beautiful parks, edgy contemporary museums, wide shopping streets and cozy squares…

As Malmo was a huge market place back in Middle Ages as a part of Hanseatic League, most of the citadel was builded in 15 century. From that time, the houses with wooden construction were very popular. Some of the examples are still present, like the ones at the Lillatorg (engl Little square). 

Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia, but it struggled with the adaptation to post-industrialism. As a result the modern buildings landmark is marking nowadays city. One of the examples is the Turning torso – tallest building in Scandinavia, kinda  neo-futurist, residential skyscraper.

20161030_144757The city’s  symbol is the griffin’s head – a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle’s talons as its front feet. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin was also thought of as king of all creatures. Griffins are known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.

All in all, good day in Sweden.

I honestly don’t know how life took me back to this stupid city but here I am. Apparently a day trip to Malmö is the Danish people’s favourite place for a getaway from Copenhagen. I did the same. Again. =.=

 This time, I passed the Öresund Bridge by car.

Much of the international acclaim for Scandinavian architecture in the early decades of the twentieth century can be attributed to Swedish Grace, a style mixing Neoclassicism with traditional local elements. But to me, this looks more like one big shopping center for Danish. Or sometimes as a ghetto. Which it actually is as the biggest number of immigrants are from Bosnia War 1991 – 1995. And remained there. One of them is Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

We decided to sit and have a coffee at the main square – Lilla Torg. Last time I visited Malmö was November. I remembered the grey unattractive streets and this main square. I was sitting with a friend just at the corner, commenting the life here. Comparing it now with the visit in July – life here seems so different. All the restaurants and bars are open. People are just bursting around, the terraces are packed. The colours actually appeared.

Lilla Torg now seems romantic, a little square located in the centre of the city, close to the main shopping square “Stortorget”.

This little area is filled with small shops and cozy cafés. Besides its many shops and cafés, it is also known as the historical square in Malmö. The square was created in 1590 and was used as a shopping square then and still is today.

King Karl X Gustav

the nearby square is called Stortorget. In the centre stands the great equestrian statue of King Karl X Gustav, who had conquered the former Danish provinces and finally united them with the Swedish Empire by the Peace of Roskilde in 1658.

The square is surrounded by some interesting historical buildings. On its eastern side stands the historical town hall, built 1544–1547 with its renewed façade in Dutch Renaissance style from 1860.

The northwest corner of the square is dominated by the Kocksa Huset, the former palace of the native-born Westphalian Jörgen Kock, built 1522–24. Kock was master of the mint and once a powerful men of the Danish Empire and became Mayor of Malmö later.

Town Hall

The oldest pharmacy Lejonet (The Lion), founded in 1571, is located at the exit of the square to Södergatan. The current building was erected in neo-Renaissance style in 1896. Worth seeing is the fire gable of this 5-storey building, probably as the only building in Europe with fully restored advertising paintings from the period around 1900.

Saint Peter’s Church is a Brick Gothic church in Malmö built in the 14th century as the main church of the city. The church was a spiritual centre during the Reformation, and was one of only a few churches in what was at the time medieval Denmark that suffered damage due to iconoclasm as a consequence of the Reformation. St. Peter’s Church contains late medieval murals of recognized high quality, as well as a number of unusual furnishings. The altarpiece, made in 1611, is one of the largest in the Nordic countries.

Malmö’s old town Gamla Staden consists basically of two different parts; the district Gamla Väster with its large number of historical buildings in the west and the eastern part, which was renewed during the urban planning rehabilitation efforts in the 1960s. I bought myself there a cinnamon roll – a typical swedish cake, also known as Kanelbullar.
